Grand hotel boys. Hyderabad, India

The back door of the Grand hotel, in the Abids area of Hyderabad city, Andra-Pradesh.
After i took a few photos, i went to talk to those guys, who were just enjoying a little break from work in the kitchen. They told me they had come from a small town just outside Hyderabad, where it was impossible for them to find a job. Like most people who come to big Indian cities to work in such places, they usually have to spend 13 to 15 hours at work for a small income, that will partly be sent to their families back home.

(S) Nightfall, Salen

(S) Nightfall, Salen

The first in a series of images from my Scotland 2010 holiday.

Nightfall at Salen on Isle of Mull, Scotland. Great difficulty, and danger, in seeing where to park car, walk, or place tripod here in this light, but photography was possible some nights at up to midnight (towards where the sun had set).

All images in this series will be preceded by the letter (S).

Distance travelled, from Waterford = 3479 km (2162 miles). Co-driver P.S. drove at least half the distance! Number of ferries used = eleven!!!

Spent 2.5 days (2 overnights) travelling from ferryport at Stranraer to Isle of Skye Bridge at Kyle of Lochalsh. Stayed seven nights at Kyleakin village near the bridge, and on return journey spent three days driving back south to Stranraer, staying two nights at Salen, Isle of Mull, and one night at a farmhouse B&B south of Girvan, Ayrshire.

Accommodation at Salen was in the B&B called ARDMORE. HIGHLY recommended.

And so it begins... The hoarding of incandescents

And so it begins... The hoarding of incandescents

As you may know, incandescent light bulbs are being phased out starting in 2010 in favor of lower energy bulbs -- namely, compact fluorescents (CFLs).

The problem is, CFLs make me physically ill and I literally can't be in the same room as them for more than a few minutes.

After 5 minutes, I start feeling a little odd.

After 10 minutes, my eyes can't seem to focus well and feel strained, I feel a little nauseous, and I start feeling anxious inside like something is wrong.

After 15 minutes, a headache starts coming on, my vision is disturbed, my balance a little off, and I have muscle tremors.

After 20 minutes, I am literally desperate to get out of the environment and feel like something bad neurologically is about to happen. Whether or not something terrible does happen I don't know - I have never stuck it out to find out.

The above is what happens if the environment is exclusively lit with CFLs. If there are other sources of light - day light, halogen, incandescent, etc - I can last longer, especially if the CFL light isn't in my direct field of view.

Most people tell me that CFLs have been improved and the color and brightness are equal to incandescents. Others are quick to point out that they need to warm up for a minute. And still others tell me that CFLs simply don't cause migraines. Somehow, these doled out platitudes are supposed to magically make my problem disappear. I regard these statements are arrogant.

It's not the color temperature. It's not the warm-up time. And it's not the modern electronic ballasts. I have been around many different types of CFLs and frankly, NONE of them are acceptable.

This problem is affecting nearly every aspect of my life. I can no longer go over to friend's houses for dinner, visit family members, work in certain environments, or study at the library at school because of these wretched bulbs. I can no loner go to my favorite restaurants, small boutiques, or walk through downtown Portsmouth or Boston's Back Bay because of these lights. When I travel, I bring light bulbs with me to swap out the bulbs in my hotel room. I've even brought bulbs to people's houses and asked them to switch while there.

Oddly, long tube fluorescents don't bother me - it's specific to the compact variety. It's not the color temperature - they are all equally bad. And it's not any EMFs since I can't even look at the lights from a moving car.

I think it has something to do with the frequency of light, and maybe the ratio of surface area in the CFL bulbs compared with the long tubes. I know that some epileptics can have a seizure due to light frequency (strobes, monitors, etc). My general practitioner suggested I may have seizure-like brain activity (I've always been rather light sensitive). I'm trying neurofeedback to try to balance out my brain waves (I have a theory I might not have enough delta wave activity). It's the only thing I have to try.

I've decided to speak publicly about this because it's seriously impacting my life, and maybe there are others out there experiencing the same thing. It's been frustrating because I don't have many places to turn for help, and most people don't believe me because they don't personally experience this.

In the mean time, I'm stockpiling incandescent bulbs. I figure 350 should give me a 50 year supply. Here's the first 40.

Halberstadt had a track scholarship to Oklahoma State University where he won several big eight titles and then placed third in The Boston Marathon in 1971. A versatile runner, Halberstadt has clocked a sub four minute mile and a sub 2:12 marathon.

Rune Holmen was a 13:43 5000m runner who competed at the 1971 European championships. His son is the reigning Finnish 10,000 metres champion who made a 2:16 marathon debut in Rotterdam, April, 1991. Rune married Nina, who was 1974 European women's 3000 metres champion.

Leonard Hilton came to the University of Houston from Houston's Austin High School. An outstanding distance runner for the Cougars from 1967-71, Hilton was an All-American and school record-setting runner. Hilton earned All-America honors in the 3-mile run in 1971 with a third-place finish at the NCAA Championships.

His performance at the NCAA meet came after he set school records in five different events. He holds school records in the mile (3:59.64), two-mile run (8:42.3), three-mile run (13:04.3) and the six-mile run (28:30). In addition to those records, Hilton ran the anchor leg on Houston's 1970 distance medley relay team that set the current school record of 9:34.0.

He is the only UH runner and first Texan to break the 4-minute barrier in the mile and attained the feat 32 times. After completing his running career at Houston, Hilton ran for the 1972 United States Olympic Team at Munich, Germany. He qualified for the team with a third-place finish in the 5,000 meters at the U.S. Olympic Trials. Hilton qualified for the 1972 USA Olympic team and he finished third in the 5,000 meter run at the U.S. Olympic Trials in Eugene, Ore.

During his running career, Hilton was a two-time American champion in the mile in 1973 and 1975. In 1970, as part of his training, Hilton entered and won the American National Marathon.

After winning the mile for the second time at the USA Championships in 1975, Hilton helped form the Houston Harriers as a national and international championship caliber running club.

Hilton earned his degree in engineering from UH and later served as vice president of operations with Kinder Morgan Energy and Enron Corp.

Toronto Palestine Film Festival (TPFF) filled the AGO Cinema on October 5, 2010 with the sold-out screening of the Canadian Premiere of Zindeeq. In attendance was Zindeeq’s writer, director and producer, Michel Khleifi, who is one of the founders of contemporary Palestinian cinema. Khleifi, originally from Nazareth and residing in Belgium, has directed several award winning films including, “Fertile Memory”, “Wedding in Galilee” and “Route 181”.

Zindeeq uses haunting metaphors to contemplate the past, present and future of Palestinian society. It stars actor and filmmaker Mohammad Bakri, who plays an expat filmmaker living in Europe, who travels back to Palestine to videotape witness accounts of the 1948 Nakba expulsion from Israel. After his nephew kills a man in his former hometown of Nazareth, a vendetta is triggered against his remaining family, but as an expat he is in denial that he is somehow included. He nevertheless decides to return to Nazareth, only to spend a long and surreal night driving and roaming the streets on foot, as he tries unsuccessfully to find refuge at various inns and avoid a gang of young Arab men intent on beating up random victims. There is an additional thread to the story involving his preoccupation with various love interests, both successful and unrequited, during which the point is emphasized that women can control the decision. As this night time odyssey progresses, the filmmaker is constantly rewinding and reviewing his tapes, tracking backwards along the various paths which lead him to the present, trying perhaps to make sense of it all but distorting the audio and visuals in the process of return. After several abortive attempts, he eventually retreats to his now abandoned family house, where he gains entry with a hidden key known only to himself. Memories are triggered by familiar, now disintegrating familial objects in the home. Ghosts appear as interview subjects for his video, as he contemplates the decisions and motivations of his parents, who had remained in Israel rather than becoming refugees. Staying or leaving, the main concern of all was the protection of their children’s’ futures. In the trashed surroundings, he also encounters a new problem facing Palestinians- squatting his home are two lost and abused boys from Gaza, who have been forced into begging and targeted for their organs by unscrupulous older men. Zindeeq was awarded the Muhr Arab Award - Best Film at the Dubai International Film Festival in 2009.

Following the screening the audience participated in a lively Q & A with Khleifi. Audience members asked Khleifi questions relating to the film, and some of whom questioned why Palestinian on Palestinian violence was profiled. Khleifi explained he wanted to portray, in a non-ideological manner, Palestinian experiences with the trauma of the Nakba and exile, and concerns in present day Palestinian society which include internal strife. He also discussed his views regarding women’s equality and the disturbing issue of forced organ donations targeting impoverished people, including Palestinian children. In several instances, he reverted the questions back to the audience to ask them for their thoughts on particular scenes.

"What an amazing night," stated programmer Dania Majid. "We are so pleased to have the Canadian Premiere of this amazing Palestinian film. The audience’s overwhelmingly positive reaction to this film is great. A lot of people thanked TPFF for bringing Zindeeq to Toronto."

The TPFF festival closed on October 8th, 2010 at the Bloor Cinema with the award winning documentary “Budrus”, an inspiring story of a village which successfully halted the construction of the Wall on their land, using passive resistance, the inclusion of women and the aid of sympathizers from both the international and Israeli community.

Denham Golf Club

Denham Golf Club

Denham Golf Club Platform was opened in 1912, some six years after the Great Western & Great Central Joint Railway opened for traffic. (In GWR parlance a platform enjoyed intermediate status between a station and a halt). The station retains three examples of the once ubiquitous GWR "pagoda" corrugated iron buildings and these are in fact the last three surviving examples on the network. As originally built, the platforms were staggered on opposite sides of the road bridge but at some point in history the up platform was rebuilt opposite the down platfom. This may explain why the two platform pagodas are dimentionally quite different from each other. The unique booking office pagoda building was severely damaged by fire in 2005 but has since been rebuilt. This is the up platform "pagoda" on 27th November 2011.

Golf Club Halt

Golf Club Halt

Where there were trains now there are 4 x 4 vehicles! This tin shack is the only surviving station remaining on the old Rye and Camber Tramway and was the destination of many of the passengers, to access the golf club adjacent. It was also the only intermediate stop between Rye and Camber. Sadly I couldn't get any pictures here without vehicles. I took this on the outward leg of the walk and on the return there were several. Pity, as it covered up the trackwork underneath, still embedded in the road

Toadstools. A place I hiked to in 2008 but the early morning light on this visit made it a very special place indeed. They have improved the easily accessible trailhead with a new sign and some free informative pamphlets. Well worth a stop when traveling through the area.

The trailhead for the toadstools is on Utah highway 89 1.4 miles east of the BLM Paria rangers’ station (where the Wave lotteries are held) and just 1.6 miles west of the south terminus to the fun dirt “Cottonwood Road”.

In the Grand Canyon there are at least two layers (representing millions of years) that are gone. They were eroded away before the next “new” layer was added on top. This is called an “unconformity” by geologists. I knew about the Grand Canyon unconformities but I had no idea that an unconformity played a roll in the formation of the “toadstool” area here along highway 89.

Paraphrasing the good information in the small trail pamphlet:
[The “bottom” layer of rocks at the toadstools is around 160 millions old (The Entrada Formation). The top layer is 97 million years old and called the Dakota Formation. In between once resided the Morrison Formation (the middle of the rock sandwich), but it was eroded completely away before the Dakota Formation rocks made their appearance].

The boundaries between rock layers at the toadstool are noticeably “tilted” in places and there are dramatic differences in the color and texture of different layers. So, an interesting geological history and some worthy for photo ops formations as a result. Plan to take your camera on the very short hike to this place, if you haven’t already been.

0 ACTIVITIES DAY TEN OF TWELVE 0

If there was one day to “live again” on this road trip then day TEN was it. It was outstanding from start to finish. The weather was A1 perfect. We had a little dirt road travel with the windows of the Jeep rolled down and a lot of good photo ops at the many different places we traveled. Oh yes, a great meal at the Escalante Outfitters to end the day properly.

We left Page, Arizona before dawn. We watched the sun come up over Navajo Mountain and Lake Powell. Then on to “The Toadstools” off highway 89 for a short hike and some great early morning light on those formations. We then backtracked 1.6 miles fto the Cottonwood road (a road I had driven recently in my pickup truck, only from north to south), and enjoyed a clear warm blue sky day drive up to Butler (Grosvenor) arch.

From Butler arch, we went on to Kodachrome Basin, where we took a short three mile loop hike. I loved the campground at Kodachrome and have promised my wife that we will camp there together and take some of the longer hikes available in that pretty little state park (Oh yes, the campground has HOT showers).

from Kodachrome Basin state park, we drove up to Bryce National Park. LOTS of snow, but beautiful on a sunny day (few other people). We ate at the Subway just outside Ruby Inn - then drove on to Rainbow Point, which at 9,100 feet, had plenty of snow (about three feet worth along the lookout path).

Then we worked our way back out Bryce, stopping to photograph at each and every lookout point that had been plowed, enjoying Bryce as the sun dropped down low and the light changed by the minute.

After Bryce we backtracked again and drove on to Escalante, Utah (one of my often visited and favorite “base camps”), where we had reserved rooms by phone at the rustic but friendly: Circle “D” motel (ask for Robert and tell him Oldmantravels with the old red Toyota pickup truck sent you).

After checking in at the Circle “D”, we headed over to the Escalante Outfitters ( hiking supply, books, free internet use, excellent food, really friendly people cafe) - - for a big dinner a cold beer, pizza, and a “toast” to the best road trip day we had enjoyed thus far.

We had LOTS of dirt road destinations in mind for day 11 of the road trip (the next day) BUT we were in for quite a surprise the next morning at Escalante. So like on all good road trips, you stay flexible, make the best of what comes your way, and go for it and that is exactly what we did.

0 3,875 MILE/12 DAY ~ 4 CORNERS ROAD TRIP OVERVIEW 0

At the start of year 2011, I made tentative plans to take a two week solo “road trip” through the Four Corners area (The Colorado Plateau), during the last half of March. Then, if my wife could get the time needed off from her part time job, I also planned a “road trip” vacation to the Southwest, in April with her.

When I put the plan together for the March trip, I decided to see if an old friend of mine, Ed (Flickr’s: OldWrangler), might be interested in joining me. I volunteered to take my old four wheel drive pickup truck and split the gasoline expense with him. We would each get an inexpensive motel room on the road to serve as “base camps” to hike, photograph, and explore back roads in the Four Corners area.

Not only did Ed accept but he also proposed that we take his brand

Bisti rock art display

0 PHOTOGRAPH PARTICULARS 0

Many of the interesting rock forms at the Bisti Wilderness, just didn't look like they would last much longer. They looked fragile and vunerable, but here they stand.

0 ACTIVITIES DAY FIVE OF TWELVE 0

After a good night’s rest at Farmington, New Mexico we left at dawn, as was our custom on this trip, with three major destinations in mind: Bisti (pronounced: Biss Tie) badlands; Chaco Canyon; and Bandelier national monument. We had motel rooms reserved at Santa Fe.

The hike into the rock and clay formations at Bisti turned out to be my favorite stop on the entire road trip. I had never been there before. We were the only ones there, the weather was bright and clear, and the formations were absolutely amazing. I used my small Garmin etrex to make certain that we would hike to one of the two “good spots” and back out, in the most time efficient manner.

There is another good section of Bisti that I know, one day, I will return to visit. Same with the De-Na-Zin area. Always something for another road trip. After Bisti we made our way to Chaco Canyon and visited Chetro Ketl and Pueblo Bonito. I had been to Chaco three times before but never in a situation where I wasn’t rushed for time. Ed and I enjoyed our walks to both ruins and took our time.

After Chaco Canyon it was clear (using the ETA on the NUVI navigator), that we weren’t going to make Bandelier with enough light to really enjoy it, so for the first and only time on this road trip, we altered our route solely as a result of “running out of time”. There were several times we altered plans due to weather and dirt (mud) road conditions.

So instead of traveling the highways that would lead us to Bandelier from Chaco, we checked the map and took a scenic but more direct highway into Santa Fe (highway 96 instead of highway 4 that would have taken us to Santa Fe via Bandelier).

We got into Santa Fe right at dark, in time to check out the historic town square, the cathedral, and get a good meal. The next morning would follow a now established and predictable routine: On each and every day of this road trip, Ed and I would load our gear back in the Jeep right at or just before dawn, always looking forward to the new day’s destinations. The way a road trip should be.

I volunteered to take my old four wheel drive pickup truck and split the gasoline expense with him. We would each get an inexpensive motel room on the road to serve as “base camps” to hike, photograph, and explore back roads in the Four Corners area.

Not only did Ed accept but he also proposed that we take his brand new 4-door Jeep Wrangler instead of my old pickup truck. That didn’t take any thinking on my part. I LOVE Jeeps and Ed and I have always got along well (decades ago, I worked for him and we had taken a fun road trip together back in 2008, along with my friend John and my youngest son). The deal was sealed.

We left my house in Central Washington early Monday morning on the 14th of March. We returned 12 days and 3,875 miles later on Friday evening March 25th. We spent a lot of time drinking Diet Pepsi from the ice chest and keeping the hits of the 60s (and occasionally the 70s), cranked up high on the Jeep’s Sirius satellite radio sound system. Sing along music! “Road trip” tunes.

Weather often dictated changes to our proposed route and activities. We stayed flexible, and in the end we visited the large majority of places we had hoped to see, when the road trip began. We had sun and clear skies, snow, dust storms, and high winds at times. Ed’s Jeep had an outside temperature display. We drove in everything from18 degree weather to temperatures in the 70s in New Mexico.

Here in outline form are the places we saw, hiked, photographed, and visited during the 12 day road trip:

Mon 3.14.11
* Interstate travel from my house in Central Washington to Lehi, Utah

Tue 3.15.11
* Scenic back roads ( Hwys: 6, 89, & 31) from Spanish Fork to Huntington, Utah
* Dirt road travel to “The Wedge” and down Buckhorn Wash to I-70.
* Side trip to the Head of Sinbad petroglyph and then on to Moab.

Wed 3.16.11
* Island in the Sky district of Canyonlands NP (Mesa Arch & Upheaval Dome)
* The Shafer “Jeep” Trail down to the White Rim road and back to Moab.
* Hike to Delicate Arch & visit Windows section in Arches NP.

Thu 3.17.11
* Newspaper Rock in the Needles district of Canyonlands NP
* Attempt back road travel thru the Abajo Mountains to Montic

Spring Flowers

Spring Flowers

Flowers at the Wyndham Hotel in Jacksonville. I came across these blooming flowers (I'm not sure what they are) on my way to the riverwalk to get some photos of the seagulls. After shoveling snow in Park City the day before my 4 day trip, these beautiful flowers and the green grass caught my eye reminding me that spring is here, and it's time to put away the snow shovel and the snow blower for another season.
